NEOM Weather and Climate Guide: Best Time to Visit by Destination

A practical climate guide to NEOM. Coast, mountain, and desert seasons, temperatures by month, what to wear, and the best time to visit each destination.

NEOM contains three distinct climate zones in a single region: the Red Sea coast, the Sarawat mountains, and the desert interior. Each has its own temperature range, weather patterns, and best visiting season. This guide covers what to expect across the year and how to plan a trip around the climate.

Three climate zones

NEOM’s geography produces a wider climate range than most regions of its size.

  • The Red Sea coast. Mediterranean conditions, warm and dry, with mild winters and hot summers. Year-round swimming.
  • The Sarawat mountains. Alpine climate, with snowfall in winter and pleasantly mild summers. Trojena and the surrounding peaks rise to 2,600 metres.
  • The desert interior. Hot summers, cold nights in winter, low rainfall throughout the year.

A NEOM visit can combine all three zones in a single trip.

Month by month

November through March: the cool season

The cool season is the best time to visit most NEOM destinations.

  • Coast temperatures: pleasant daytime highs around 22 to 27 degrees Celsius, cool evenings around 14 to 18 degrees.
  • Mountain temperatures: cold, with December and January night temperatures dropping below zero on the higher slopes. Snow is possible from December through February.
  • Desert temperatures: warm days around 20 to 25 degrees, cold nights down to 5 degrees or below.
  • Sea conditions: water around 22 to 25 degrees Celsius. Excellent for diving with good visibility.
  • Activities: ideal for beach, mountain hiking, desert tours, and diving.

April and May: spring shoulder

The shoulder season is warm and bright.

  • Coast: daytime highs around 28 to 32 degrees, very pleasant evenings.
  • Mountains: spring conditions with flowering plants and pleasant hiking.
  • Desert: hot days but tolerable mornings and evenings.
  • Sea conditions: water around 24 to 26 degrees.
  • Activities: ideal for diving, hiking at altitude, and coastal activities.

June through September: the hot season

Summer is hot on the coast and desert, mild in the mountains.

  • Coast temperatures: daytime highs around 33 to 38 degrees, warm evenings 27 to 30 degrees.
  • Mountain temperatures: pleasant 18 to 25 degrees daytime, cool 12 to 16 degrees at night.
  • Desert temperatures: hot 38 to 45 degrees daytime, warm evenings.
  • Sea conditions: water around 27 to 30 degrees Celsius.
  • Activities: best in the mountains. Coastal activities limited to early morning and evening.

October: autumn shoulder

October marks the return of pleasant conditions.

  • Coast: temperatures dropping to around 28 to 32 degrees.
  • Mountains: cool and clear, excellent visibility.
  • Desert: warm days and cool evenings.
  • Sea conditions: water around 28 degrees.
  • Activities: good for all destinations.

Best time by destination

  • Sindalah: November through April for cooler conditions; May through October for warmer water and longer days.
  • Trojena (winter sports): December through March for snow.
  • Trojena (summer activities): June through September for hiking, biking, and lake activities.
  • Magna destinations: November through April for general luxury beach hospitality.
  • Leyja (desert): October through April for comfortable temperatures.
  • Diving: November through April for clarity and surface conditions; May through October for warmer water.

Rainfall and weather events

Rainfall in the NEOM region is low across all zones. The coast and desert receive minimal annual precipitation. The mountains receive somewhat more, particularly in winter, with occasional snowstorms above 1,800 metres.

Strong wind events occur occasionally, particularly during seasonal transitions. The Red Sea can produce locally choppy conditions, generally short-lived.

What to wear

  • Coastal trips: lightweight clothing, swimwear, sun protection. Cooler months may require a light layer for evenings.
  • Mountain trips: layered clothing year-round. Heavy coats and snow gear in winter. Hiking gear in summer.
  • Desert trips: lightweight clothing, head and neck coverage, sturdy footwear. Layers for cool evenings.
  • Diving: 3 to 5 mm wetsuit in cool season; shortie or skin in warm season.

Dress code considerations also apply in Saudi Arabia: modest clothing remains the norm in public spaces, while resort destinations operate with international hospitality standards.

Practical tips

  • Sun protection is essential year-round. UV levels are high even in cooler months.
  • Hydration matters in all zones, particularly in the desert.
  • Cooler months book up early for resort accommodation. Reserve well in advance for November through March.
  • Mountain weather changes quickly, particularly in winter. Check forecasts and trail conditions.
