Leyja: NEOM Magna's Desert Canyon Eco-Resort

A guide to Leyja, the desert canyon Magna destination at NEOM. Three hotels around an oasis, the canyon walls, and an adventure base, with hiking, climbing, and dark-sky astronomy.

Leyja is the desert canyon destination of the Magna cluster at NEOM. Located in a natural canyon inland from the Gulf of Aqaba, Leyja combines three hotels with hiking, climbing, and dark-sky astronomy programming. It is the eco-resort statement of the Magna portfolio.

At a glance

  • Location: natural canyon inland from the Gulf of Aqaba, NEOM region.
  • Hotels: three, each anchored to a different setting within the canyon.
  • Programme: hiking, climbing, dark-sky astronomy, wellness, dining.
  • Position: ultra-luxury eco-resort.

The canyon setting

Leyja sits in a natural canyon, with sheer rock walls rising on either side and a flat sandy floor below. The setting offers dramatic light through the day, shifting from warm dawn through cool midday shade to the deep oranges of sunset. The canyon is bordered by sparse vegetation, supported by underground water that surfaces at the resort’s oasis.

The narrowness of the canyon creates natural shelter from wind and shifting light, lending the resort a sense of privacy unusual for an open landscape.

Three hotels

Leyja’s accommodation programme is built around three distinct hotels, each oriented to a different aspect of the canyon.

  • The oasis hotel sits at the canyon’s freshwater spring, with low-rise pavilions arranged around shaded gardens and water features.
  • The wall hotel is embedded in the canyon walls themselves, with rooms set into the rock face and balconies overlooking the canyon floor.
  • The adventure hotel is the base for the resort’s outdoor programming, with rooms oriented toward the trailheads and adventure facilities.

Each hotel has its own identity, programme, and pricing, with guests free to combine stays across the three.

Outdoor programming

Leyja’s programme is built around the canyon and surrounding desert. Activities include:

  • Hiking on graded trails through the canyon and beyond.
  • Rock climbing on graded routes on the canyon walls.
  • Canyoneering on water-cut routes through the surrounding wadis.
  • Cycling on graded trails outside the canyon.
  • Yoga and breathwork in dedicated pavilions at the oasis.
  • Star observation at the on-site dark-sky platform.

Dark-sky astronomy

The Leyja location, with low light pollution and clear desert air, is one of the best dark-sky sites in the wider region. The resort hosts a dedicated astronomy platform with professional-grade telescopes, resident astronomers, and a programme of evening observation sessions, guided star tours, and astrophotography workshops.

Wellness and dining

Wellness programming at Leyja draws on Arabian traditions, hydrotherapy at the oasis, and desert-inspired treatments. The dining programme is heavily seasonal and regional, emphasising lighter cuisine that complements the active outdoor programme.

How Leyja fits in Magna

Leyja is the eco-resort, active-outdoor statement in the Magna cluster. Where Epicon is the iconic skyline, Siranna the wellness retreat, and Utamo the entertainment experience, Leyja brings the desert and natural landscape into the portfolio. It also gives Magna a complete portfolio: ocean, ocean-front cove, subterranean experience, and inland canyon.
