NEOM Technology and Innovation: AI, Robotics, and Smart Infrastructure

Technology is one of the defining promises of NEOM. From AI-led services in The Line to robotic construction at Oxagon, autonomous transport across the region, and dedicated research centres, the project positions itself as a testbed for technologies that go beyond the current state of practice. AI-led services

NEOM has announced its intention to embed AI services across daily life in The Line and the wider region. Specific applications include:

  • Personalised services in residential, retail, and hospitality, with AI-driven recommendations for daily decisions.
  • Predictive maintenance for buildings, transport, and utilities, reducing downtime and resource use.
  • Civic services integrated into a unified digital platform, with permits, registrations, and payments handled in a single environment.
  • Healthcare diagnostics supported by AI-enabled imaging and triage tools.

The platform vision is a city that anticipates needs rather than reacting to them.

Autonomous transport

NEOM’s transport plan emphasises autonomous mobility. The Line’s high-speed rail is designed for automated operation. Within districts, autonomous shuttles and on-demand vehicles complement walking, cycling, and rail.

Oxagon and Magna destinations also incorporate autonomous solutions where appropriate. Trojena uses autonomous shuttles between resort districts. Sindalah operates electric mobility solutions for guest transport across the island.

Robotics in construction

The scale of NEOM construction has driven significant investment in construction robotics. Applications include:

  • 3D-printed concrete for foundations, walls, and select architectural elements.
  • Autonomous earth-moving equipment for excavation and site preparation.
  • Robotic assembly of standardised structural and architectural components in factory environments.
  • Drone inspection of vertical construction at scale.

Modular construction factories at Oxagon produce building components for on-site assembly, allowing higher quality control than fully on-site construction.

Sustainability technology

Technology underpins NEOM’s sustainability commitments. Solar and wind generation, large-scale battery storage, electrolyser arrays for green hydrogen, smart grid management, and water recycling all rely on technology at and beyond the current state of practice. The combination is intended to make NEOM a working demonstration of renewable-led infrastructure at city scale.

Research and development

NEOM has announced dedicated R&D programmes across its destinations.

  • Oxagon hosts research facilities aligned with industrial tenants in advanced manufacturing, robotics, mobility, and food and water systems.
  • The Line is itself a research site for urban infrastructure, with embedded sensors and data collection that feed into ongoing development.
  • Trojena hosts research on alpine ecology, snow making, and high-altitude tourism operations.
  • Sindalah anchors marine research on coral reef restoration and Red Sea biodiversity.

NEOM has signed research partnerships with universities and laboratories internationally, alongside its own internal research programmes.

Cybersecurity and data sovereignty

Operating a city on integrated digital services requires investment in cybersecurity and data architecture. NEOM has announced commitments around cybersecurity, data sovereignty, and resident privacy, including the use of advanced encryption, zero-trust architectures, and clear data governance frameworks.

Talent

The technology programme also requires talent. NEOM has been hiring across software engineering, data science, AI, robotics, and cybersecurity for several years, both for direct positions and through contractor and joint-venture roles.

Why this matters

The technology programme at NEOM is significant in three ways. It supports the operational vision of the region.
